Green Initiative of NBSC, Lucknow
National Bank Staff College, Lucknow, has decided to roll out initiatives to make the campus more environment friendly. The college plans to take measures in this direction by addressing major aspects, viz., biodiversity, energy and water conservation and minimizing waste.
The college is emphasizing on the need for minimising the Institute's impact on the environment and its carbon footprint. The green initiatives taken up by NBSC are based on sustainability principles & civic responsibilities.
1. Grid Connected Roof-Top Solar Power System
NBSC has entered into a Power Purchase Agreement with M/s Clean Max Enviro Energy Solutions Pvt. Ltd. for setting up of Grid Connected Roof top Solar Power System under RESCO modelwith total capacity of 108.8kWp at NBSC and BIRD, Lucknow Campus of NABARD.Under this model the entire system is owned by the developer and NBSC has incurred no capital expenditure.Responsibility of lifetime Operation & Maintenance for the system rests with the developer under RESCO Solar model ( OPEX model). The solar panels will be set up on roof tops of BIRD office Building and hostels and will cover a total area of 900 sqrmtrs. BIRD will utilize the electricity generated, for which we would be paying a pre-decided tariff of Rs. 3.80 per unit for next 25 years. Thus NBSC will incur a saving of approx. Rs. 4 per unit as compared to prevailing commercial electricity tariff rates.
2. Bio-Composting Pit for waste management
On the occasion of NABARD Foundation Day, NBSC embarked on in-situ utilization of organic waste and recycling by construction of 3 Bio-composting Pitsfor waste management and productive use of green manure in-campus gardening activity.
Bio-Composting Pit will convert organic material, such as garden waste and kitchen waste, into nutrient-rich manure that will improve the soil fertility. NBSC-BIRD Campus generates huge amount of organic waste, which is currently being disposed off as municipal waste. This green initiative will support source based waste management and convert waste into wealth while at the same time reducing the load on the Municipal waste disposal system. Furtherthe non-biodegradable waste will be disposed off separately. This will also benefit the environment.
3. LED lighting
LEDs, being solid state components, are difficult to damage with external shock, unlike fluorescent and incandescent bulbs which are fragile.NBSC has converted 90% of its office fluorescent tube-lights into LEDs based lighting system, to save energy. NBSC is also converting all CFL and PLL bulbs into LED lights and panels. LED lighting system is a very efficient way of demand side energy management. Conversion from inefficient lighting system to efficient LED lighting system will not only contribute in reducing our establishment cost but also reduce ecological footprint of our campus.
4. Piped Natural Gas for NBSC and BIRD campus:
NBSC has taken a green initiative by providing Piped Natural Gas in the entire NBSC and BIRD Campus. In this regard, a MoU was signed with M/s. Green Gas Limited, which is authorized by the Central Government to lay, build, operate or expand City Gas Distribution projects in Lucknow region. Under this MoU, all 211 residential quarters as well as all the Dining Lounges of NBSC and BIRD are to be equipped with Piped Natural Gas connections. This initiative will not only reduce the carbon footprint, but also be a convenient and economical alternative for LPG.
5. Discontinuing use of Plastic packaged water bottles and making alternate arrangements
As we are aware, using plastic bottles not only involve cost but also poses a serious threat to health and environment, as they are not degradable for millions of years. NBSC has taken a decision to discontinue usage of plastic packaged water bottles to reduce pollution and environmental hazards caused by them. Alternative measures have been put in place to provide purified potable water by means of water dispensers/steel or glass flasks in NBSC office premises as well as Hostels.
